Okay...so no one knows what a Columbarium is. I've posted a picture below to give you a hint. See if that helps.
Your quiz for today is identifying the animal in the picture below. I encountered a lot of them today in the Negev Highlands. Anyone know what they are called?
I invite you to experience this sabbatical together with me. With this blog I share my experiences and will invite you to learn along with me. Join me in reading and reflecting together so we can learn together how to apply Jesus' radical teaching from the Beatitudes to our lives today.

ReplyDeleteHi Tony,
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you are learning a lot! We enjoy your posts and your perspective on all the places you are visiting. We don't know what a Columbarium is but we like the picture. The animals are called an Ibex I think.
We will pray for health and safty for you as you continue on this journey.

Pastor Tony,
ReplyDeleteMy thinking, further confirmed by your photo, is that a columbarium is a place where cremated remains -- ashes -- of people are stored. (I did NOT consult Google before thinking this!)
And...is the animal an ibex? (I did consult Google for this one, with my first thought being some type of gazelle.)
Thanks for the mental exercises!
Joy
Hi Tony,
ReplyDeleteI'm not taking your quiz because I'm not smart enough to compete with the previous entries. Those answers sound pretty good to me.
The next question should be: How many shades darker will Tony be after he finishes trekking through Israel? Pretty soon you will be blending in with the natives!
Thanks for sharing you studies and experiences with us. I look forward to your daily visits.
Love,
Mom
Good morning everyone. Thanks for your guesses! The Ibex is correct. These wild goats were not very wild at all. Great guess on the columbarium, Joy. Unfortunately it is not the right answer. The holes are much smaller...not very deep. I will give the answer tonight if no one else guesses correctly. Go ahead and google if you wish.
ReplyDeleteTony
Okay, Pastor Tony -- if people's remains can't fit in those small holes, how about BIRDS? So this is a birdhouse? Life instead of death?
DeleteDid I miss the message where you gave the correct answer?
Joy
Joy, you are correct. This columbarium is a huge underground area for raising pigeons and doves both for eating and for sacrificing. There were thousands of these holes in the wall. I will try to add a photo of the explanation on to the post.
